Are Catholics discouraged from reading the Bible? ›

That changed after 1943 when Pope Pius XII issued the encyclical Divino Afflante Spiritu. This not only allowed Catholics to study Scripture, it encouraged them to do so. And with Catholics studying Scripture and teaching other Catholics about what they were studying, familiarity with Scripture grew.

Context Summary. Luke 1:26–38 relates how a virgin learned she would miraculously bear the Son of God. The angel Gabriel comes to Mary, who is engaged to a man named Joseph. Gabriel tells Mary that she will bear a son, to be named Jesus. He will be the Promised One long awaited by the people of Israel.

By 1769, however, the King James Version had dropped these seven Old Testament books and conformed itself to the shorter Protestant canon (or list) of Old Testament. Hence, for Catholics, the King James Bible is incomplete, lacking these books that were in the Septuagint (the Greek Old Testament).

King James DID NOT remove books from the Bible. The original translation of the King James Version of the Bible contained exactly the same books as in the Catholic Bible. The difference was that the disputed books of the Old Testament were included as a separate section.

Answer: It depends on the intent of the particular biblical author. If he intended what he wrote to be taken literally, then we should take it literally. If he meant for it to be taken symbolically, then that's how we should take it.

We are not just “allowed", but encouraged to read the Bible. It's better to use a Catholic Bible, since it includes all the books of the Septuagint (and not just the books that Luther liked) but really, in a pinch a Protestant Bible is fine too.

Catholics believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God. From the beginning of Christianity, the Catholic Church defined the canon of Scripture – the books you find in every Christian Bible – and defined what it meant to be a follower of Jesus Christ.
